Follow these steps for a clean first launch that preserves performance defaults.
After Chrome opens, pin it to the taskbar, review startup apps so competing browsers do not fight for RAM, and visit chrome://settings/performance to toggle Memory Saver and Energy Saver. Remove extensions you no longer use—each one adds JavaScript cost on every page. Finally, open chrome://gpu to confirm hardware acceleration is active. If the page shows software rendering only, update your GPU driver and relaunch Chrome.

Install from the App Store or Google Play so updates arrive through the store. On mobile, enable sync to pull desktop tabs, use dark theme to reduce OLED power draw, and limit background data if you are on a metered plan. Android Lite mode (where available) can shrink images on slow networks. iPad users can enable desktop site mode for denser productivity layouts while still syncing with a Windows or Mac profile.
Use the Linux download page to select .deb or .rpm. Prefer repository installs when your distro supports them so security patches land with system updates. After install, confirm chrome://gpu acceleration and disable unused GNOME/KDE extensions that inject browser helpers. Flatpak or Snap variants may exist in community channels; for the classic Google build, stick to the packages offered on the Linux platform page.
Chrome can import bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history during first-run. Import once, then verify saved passwords under Settings. Clear leftover toolbars from the previous browser if they registered as system search providers. Keep only essential extensions after migration to protect cold-start time.
